Dinosaur Play Mat Tutorial

WOW! My Dinosaur Play Mat won the last round of SYTYC... THANKS to everyone who voted for me! I am psyched to have made it into the final 4!... The tutorial for this is SOON to follow. I am hoping to play catch up this week. Congratulations to the other crafters! SO many awesome crafts again this week!

Felt Dinosaur Play Mat

We love all things Dinosaurs around here! So, for the animal theme I made a Dinosaur Habitat.

 

This habitat is full of hand sewn prehistoric creatures... Including a lava spewing Volcano, Brontosaurus, T-Rex, Stegosaurus, and some Prehistoric Trees.

 

Each piece is movable which allows for endless combinations of prehistoric play.The felt mat can even be folded up and taken along with you to      grandma's house! 

 

 

   
 

  

 

Rocket Ship Softie

I made this Rocket Ship Softie for the So You Think You're Crafty? auditions.

I made it through the AUDITIONS and I am officially competing in the SYTYC challenge!!!

This was my entry.....

I must admit that my crafting energy tends to be more suited to my girls than to my boy. I am always looking for cool, fun, and creative things to make for him. Lately, my son loves all things related to Outer Space... So the crafting ideas have been endless!  This Rocket Ship Softie was an instant favorite! It is made from 4 panels of fabric and is stuffed with wool batting. The astronauts are painted wooden peg people...they are sturdy enough to withstand all of the "flying" they do as they travel from planet to planet. 

 

 I also made this coordinating Robot Bag so that my son can take his Outer Space friends with him on his adventures. The bag is made out of a Japanese canvas fabric and the straps are out of my new favorite material... Nylon Webbing.

 

Felt Pirate Crown

I have really been loving the "Celebrate The Boy" month from Dana and Rae at Made.... 

Keeping in the spirit of crafting for our boys... 

Here is a Pirate Crown that I made for Milo. 

I love making felt crowns... 

In fact, each of my children recieve a new one each year for their birthday!

This pirate crown was part of a gift that included a pirate tunic and pirate hook!

 
  

Outer Space Birthday

In keeping with the theme of Celebrating Our Boys I thought that I would share some boy themed birthday parties that we have had. 

Milo's 5th birthday (last year) had an Outer space theme! 

We had rocket ship bubbles, freeze dried ice cream,a rocket ship pinata, and of course a 10 foot metal rocket playhouse?... 

Joseph built a rocket ship that "crashed" in the woods. 

The cake was a robot. It is was a chocolate cake covered rolled fondant.

I made space rocks by covering little toys with a paste of baking soda and baked them for 30 min until they were hard. We hid them in the woods and each child used metal tongs to gather their rocks and bring them to the space lab. They put their rocks in the bowl of space water (vinegar) and watched them magically bubble and fizz to reveal their toy!  

The kids spent an hour shooting air rockets off the deck into the woods!

My son is a bike rider, skier, jumper, climber, cowboy, and a brave knight... But is also finger knitter, sewer, a baker of pies, and a willing (sometimes) participant in the dress up games with his sisters... 

A generally lovable tough boy!
